Just wrapped up an extensive mural and hand-painted signage project for a new restaurant in Freeport, Maine, the Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro. Decor and renovation by Nicola’s Home of Yarmouth, Maine. The food is amazing, as the kitchen is run by the Royal River Grill House team, and the space came together in a really exciting way. I am honored to have been part of the wonderfully talented team that opened this restaurant, and I look forward to many meals in the lovely new space!
We covered the existing drywall with faux brick panels, which I distressed to look like old bricks. This was the surface that the murals were painted on. The idea was to paint old Italian advertisements and then distress them, to give the space a sense of time and age. A patina. The surface that we chose to mural was 80 ft long, so I called in Will Sears of Better Letter Hand Painted Signs to assist me in finishing the project on time.
Hand painted roosters on glass windows.

I stripped and refinished this antique mirror to go behind the bar, and hand painted the logo on the glass.
The owner repeatedly mentioned that he would like a large lion’s head somewhere in the restaurant. He also mentioned that he would like to have the phrase, “Strive for Excellence,” printed somewhere in the space, as a reminder to the staff, and any patrons that happened to be paying attention. The stone oven wall seemed like a large empty space, so the interior designer and I came up with the idea of creating a custom crest to fill the space, and surprise the owner. I designed and hand-painted this crest, with a plaster sculpture of a lion’s head, and the phrase, written in italian. The crest was custom built by Monk & I Construction of Portland, ME.
